What your students do

Your kindergartners listen to a short October story twice, then say the question back, draw their answer, and find the clue in the story. On the last stage they trace the story's own words and tell why, and they color the I Can boxes as they finish each step.

Why teachers love it

One read-aloud works for your whole class: hand each child Stage I, II, or III. Every story is written at a true kindergarten read-aloud level, every question can be answered from the story, and the teacher key gives you a model answer for all 30.

What's included

  • 30 teacher read-aloud stories about October (about 45 to 65 words each), one for every school day of the month
  • A read-aloud page for every story with a large picture, the question, and talk-it-through prompts for all five steps
  • Stage I: Listen and Draw; Stage II: Listen, Draw, and Find (circle the picture clue); Stage III: Draw, Write, and Tell (trace and copy the story's words)
  • An I Can checklist with picture icons on every sheet, plus I Can desk cards
  • A model answer for all 30 stories, with what a strong drawing shows
  • A kindergarten R.A.C.E.S. rubric with a student self-check
  • Talk starter cards, a student tracker, and a class tracker
  • A 2-page teacher guide and a story index with the Halloween week stories marked
  • Every page in color and in black and white, plus 7 R.A.C.E.S. posters

Perfect for

  • A 10 to 15 minute daily read-aloud and response routine all October
  • Small groups and intervention
  • Building text evidence habits before first grade
  • Halloween week stories that stay calm and kind
